Why You Must Use An Effective Squeeze Page To Succeed At Email Marketing

Why An Effective Squeeze Page Rules and Websites Suck!

When I first got into internet marketing/blogging, I was clueless as to what I was doing. I for some reason, thought money was just going to fall out of the sky and magically fall into my accounts.

Ok that’s a little far-fetched but I was a bit naive during my novice days. Me and my buddy Chris just couldn’t seem to figure it out; how in the heck were these bloggers and internet marketers getting 100+ sign-ups per day?

I remember we would sit around chatting about how we got 5 sign-ups that day with a sort of chip on our shoulder. Of course this was before we heard about what other internet pros were doing.

Want to know what’s really funny? We got word that in order to get subscribers fast, you had to give something away free. That’s the rule of internet marketing. You have to put something out there that readers will want and in return, trust you with their email address.

Well I gave away a book that a guru was selling for $50 (I won’t say any names) and he was giving away a book written by an internet marketer with a lot of skin in the game called “Websites Suck & Squeeze Pages Rule!

He wasn’t concerned with what the title said. We were more concerned with giving away something with someone else’s name on it that was popular. Not until almost a year later did the bright light bulb go off in our heads.

We should be using a squeeze page! Duuuuuuuh!

What Is An Effective Squeeze page?

Don’t get the heading confused. An effective squeeze page is still a website but it’s a very simple one. It should only consist of 3 things:

  • An attention grabbing headline that reaches out and slaps the reader
  • Some basic information about what you’re giving away
  • An email web-form for them to sign up to your list.
Graphics are a plus but you don’t want to go over board simply because you want to viewer to pay attention to one thing and one thing only; what you have for free and why they must sign up for it before they leave. I’ll talk about exactly what you need to give away for free a bit later.

Why You Need An Effective Squeeze Page

I think everyone who wants to control their income online should do email marketing. It’s called the “license to print money“. Why? Because when you get a list that’s big and responsive, you can send out 1 email with an affiliate offer and based on percentages, you could walk away with(or wake up to) enough affiliate sales to go on a vacation.

An effective squeeze page gives the viewer a taste of what you have to offer; just a taste and nothing more. Check out my prime example of an effective squeeze page below. I was getting 20+ sign-ups per day with this very squeeze page and that’s in the beginning.

I’ve since started giving this ebook away opt-in free because the traffic I was getting wasn’t targeted. I’ll explain this in greater detail a little later.

Notice how my headline is coming directly at them. “If you read one book this week, then it needs to be this book!” Also, pay attention to the coloring; the placement of red. Notice how it basically says “Warning: Download this book” and then the red arrow pointing them to the signup box.

That’s some top-secret stuff right there and I did that on purpose. Not going to get into that in this post. Maybe later. Other than an amazing head-line and a promise of some great information, this page does nothing but entice the reader to sign up. Basically squeezing the information out of them. ;-)

How To Make An Effective Squeeze Page

Making an effective squeeze page can be easier than most think and especially with the right software. For the squeeze page above, I used a theme called OptimizePress which I absolutely love and recommend to any and everyone. If you want to skinny (full info) on this theme, make sure you check out my Official OptimizePress Review.

If you’re not looking to switch up themes, I suggest you just create a new page on your site, add an attention grabbing headline, maybe a picture of what you’re giving away for free and a signup form.

Now signup forms don’t just fall out of the sky. If you’re in need of a good email marketing system (which you are if you’re not building a list yet), use the one that I and 90% of other pro internet marketers and bloggers use; Aweber. Luckily for you, the first month is only $1. Click here to check them out for only $1. If you’re a bit skeptical and want some more information, check out my Review: Aweber vs iContact; which should I use?

Another way that some internet marketers use is Simple Squeeze Page Generator. This site lets you create a squeeze page and then add it to your site. I’ve never used the service because I always use paid squeeze pages but it’s totally 100% free.

Keys To A Super Effective Squeeze Page

I told you above that one important part of an effective squeeze page is giving something of value away for free. It’s best that you give something away that you yourself created. This makes you seem like an authority in your niche because readers are reading your words.

Best things to give away are ebooks, free reports, case studies and so on. People just want information. Don’t think you have to be an expert on the subject. You just have to know more than most people and you’re a genius to them.

These reports, ebooks and so on, don’t have to be 100 pages. I’d suck at this internet thing if I had to create 100 page books to give away for free. Most of mine average out at 14 pages. Ebooks can be longer but it’s not meant to be a novel; just a brief discussion about your niche.

I’ll give you access to my most talked about e-book (no opt-in of course) and also to a special report I created. Let you see what I’m working with. ;-)

The most important part of having an effective squeeze page is driving traffic to it. They thrive 100% off of traffic; if you get no traffic, then no signups.

Since Google doesn’t like to add squeeze pages in their search rankings, you have to drive traffic to them. Here are a few ways to drive traffic to your squeeze pages.

  • Facebook posts
  • YouTube videos
  • Guest blog posts
  • commenting on other blogs and forums
  • paid advertising (adwords, Facebook, banner ads etc)
There are more but those are the basics that are cool and never go out of style. You have to make sure that you’re getting targeted traffic. I made the mistake of building a list of people who just wanted my ebook. They just wanted something free. Yea that list bought a few things here and there but nothing like I expected.

I saw it more valuable to just give them my book opt-in free.

Pros and Cons Of Squeeze Pages

effective squeeze pageOne bad thing about squeeze pages is search engines don’t like to rank them. Search engines like content.

Squeeze pages don’t have much more than a picture and some bullet points. That’s nowhere near enough to win over search engines.

Your main focus should be on driving traffic to them. Once you get traffic to them, percentages kick in.

You’re going to have people who are hungry for the information that you give them and then there are those that are just cool with the knowledge they have stored in their brains.

Check your percentages via aweber’s web-form displays vs signups stats. If you see a huge number of signups (over 50%), I wouldn’t do too much tweaking.

I’d contact a professional copywriter and ask them to have a look at my squeeze page to see if there was something missing that might increase signups. You can do this on sites like WarriorForum. Just create a thread and ask visitors to check out your squeeze page and tell you what they think. They usually love to voice they’re opinion.

If your numbers are low, I suggest paying a copywriter to create the sales copy for an effective  squeeze page. It’s either that or spy on your visitors to see exactly what they’re doing on your site. Ok that sounds far-fetched but there is a plugin for bloggers that will record actions of every single visitor to a site.

This can later be looked at to see what paths visitors take when they come to your squeeze page. I once saw visitors going to the bottom of my site to read something on the bottom and then they left. After seeing this a few times, I deleted it. That plugin is called WPClicks and I highly recommend it.

The overall good thing about an effective squeeze page is once  you get it right, it will funnel in leads like nobody’s business. That’s when you’ve graduated from squeeze page to effective squeeze page.

Some Bonus Tips For An Effective Squeeze Page

Anticipation – I’ve noticed a few things in my days of internet marketing; one of them being that sometimes, the less, the better. You should give them just enough information to get them anxious to download your free gift.

Solve a problem – An effective squeeze page, upon first glance, should almost solve their problem for them. (Example: “Hate your job? How would you like to work half as much as you do now and make 3 times as much?”). If you can get them to see the bigger picture just on the squeeze page, they can only imagine what’s waiting for them once they sign up; but you must deliver or you’ll lose your sign-ups quick.

Effective bullet points – I read a blog post on bullet points and boy are they just more than words sitting next to a small black ball. They can be very powerful if you have to use them right. Put a statement and explain it a bit. Put yourself in the shoes of the reader.

“No Dont leave” – some people will say that “exit pop-up” scripts are aggravating but there’s not doubting that they produce numbers. You’re not going to capture everyone that comes through your page. Why not try to sell them something when they leave?

These scripts pop-up and give the visitor a bit of information on an offer they may be interested in. If they bite, they click the “stay on page” or “cancel” button and they’re automatically redirected to another page. You can put your blog, a certain post or better yet, an affiliate link. I have this on all of my squeeze pages.

Now setting this up, I’m totally clueless as to how to do it. I searched long and hard trying to figure out how to do it but ended up with nothing. Luckily for me, OptimizePress has it pre-installed into all their sales and squeeze pages. All it takes is clicking a checkbox and you have it.

Testing, Testing and More Testing – you constantly have to test and see what works best. Don’t just believe what another internet marketer tells you in their email. Find your own results. I’ve learned that the best internet marketers don’t give you half of they’re REAL methods. They just let us play catch-up.

In Conclusion

Creating an effective squeeze page involves alot but having the right tools and I admit, some patience, you’ll have one up and grabbing leads in no time. You need one if you plan on dominating online. Until I created a squeeze page, I was only seeing a few sign-ups per day.

Now I get multiple signups and see that squeeze pages are a must. This is why I use OptimizePress for all my blogs. It allows me to easily build an effective squeeze page.
